Search services and support for migrants

Sefton Libraries, in partnership with other organisations, offer a cultural landing point for any members of the community both new and old. Aside from the expected provision of books, computers and printers, we offer a range of activities and workshops. We are developing a programme of drop-in advice sessions as well as creative and language learning sessions for sanctuary seekers in Bootle Library and Netherton Library. We also offer a range of activities for children and young people as well as adults. You can also access digital services, such as tablet loans, free data on SIM cards, and language learning software. Overall Sefton Libraries aim to be a welcoming and relaxed space for anyone to work, learn or socialise.
RAIS is a local charity which provides advocacy, information and support services to refugees and asylum seekers living in Lancaster and Morecambe. All of our staff and volunteers have experience helping asylum seekers and refugees in our city and are committed to welcoming and supporting them. WHAT WE DO Drop-in for information and support RAIS runs a twice-weekly drop-in for refugees and asylum seekers at The Cornerstone, Sulyard Street, Lancaster LA1 1PX on Mondays and Thursdays from 3.00 until 5.00 p.m. We also have a drop-in in Morecambe at Bare Methodist Church, Seaborn Road, Morecambe LA4 6BB on Fridays from 2.30 until 4.30 p.m. At the drop-ins, we can explain official correspondence from the Home Office and other agencies. We can provide information on matters including housing, benefits, employment, education, family reunion and applying for indefinite leave to remain. We will refer or signpost to other professional agencies for advice where appropriate. All enquiries and any information given to us are treated in the strictest confidence. We never pass on information to other people or agencies without the enquirer’s permission. Our immigration solicitor, Susan Liew is available for legal advice. BRASS is a registered charity providing befriending and support services for refugees, asylum seekers and refused asylum seekers living in Bolton.
  • Specialised advice on immigration and asylum, citizenship and rights under the law.
  • Support and information to access public services e.g. Health, Housing, statutory agencies etc.
  • English classes with trained ESOL tutors and volunteers.
  • Workshops to promote understanding of UK life, rights and responsibilities and community participation.
  • Opportunities, training and support to develop skills as peer supporters and volunteers.
  • Support to move into employment through skills development, job search, CV writing and confidence building.
  • Reducing isolation and promoting well-being through creative, fitness, healthy eating and group activities and drop-in and befriending services.

Darwen Asylum Refugee Enterprise (DARE) provides a drop-in service for the local refugee and asylum seeker community. It takes place every Wednesday from 9am to 1.30pm in the Central United Reformed Church on Duckworth Street, Darwen BB3 1AT. DARE’s English Club meets every Wednesday from 10am to 12pm. Volunteers offer support to learners to improve their spoken English. DARE volunteers provide other support services at the weekly drop-ins including health, housing and employment support.
Nigeria Community Association promotes identity culture and a stronger community through community projects and events focused on reaching out to people. They aim to end loneliness/depression and change the lives of those affected by it. To support and empower the community, refugees, asylum seekers, and the deprived in the community by educating, training and rendering services for community integration. To support and celebrate the potential in our youth and also empower them.
DP aims to provide a safe environment for asylum seekers and refugees where they can find friendship, food and practical help. The Casework team at the Destitution Project (DP) provides casework support for asylum seekers and refused asylum seekers who live in Bolton. (Please note that, based on our Charity’s registration, we are not able to provide casework help to anyone living outside of Bolton or anyone who is an EU citizen or a British passport holder.) Wednesdays are our drop in day for accessing the food bank, clothing donations, a hot meal, recreational activities, a free barber and basic English classes.
These courses are run at Haslingden Library , twice a week with a qualified tutor. They are held in the town centre so on all local transport links. The courses are offered as unaccredited and anyone can join even if they attend provision elsewhere. Course timetable: ESOL for Life and Work Beginners (entry 1/ entry 2): Monday & Thursday 9.30am – 12pm ESOL for Life and work Pre-entry: Monday and Thursday 12.30pm – 3pm To join the course please attend at the start of one of the class times and enrol with the tutor.
