Our General English courses aim to develop your ability to communicate in a variety of different contexts and across a range of topics from work and education to shopping and travel. We focus on developing your language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) as well as your knowledge and proficiency in grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. We use a variety of approaches and teaching techniques to meet your language learning needs. Our teachers aim to deliver informative, engaging, and practical lessons that will help you reach your language learning goals.
ESOL courses are available to start all year round and are ideal for anyone who wants to improve and refresh their everyday skills in English and maths. They have been designed to allow learners to study around their current work and life commitments and learn at a pace that suits them. Bury College offer ESOL classes from Pre-Entry to Level 1, including Functional Skills English and maths qualifications, in addition to GCSE English and maths. Lessons take place during the day and in the evening. Bury College also offers additional support through Student Services which may include help with the costs of travelling to college, counselling and mental health support, additional learning support and welfare advice. ESOL Skills for Work

If English isn’t your first language and you want to gain a recognised national certificate for your course of study, we want to offer you the best possible choices. We can help you to improve your English skills and achieve your goals.

Benefits:

Fully accredited ESOL qualification from Entry 1 to Level 1 in speaking, listening, reading and writing. You can learn and practice skills needed for work. Some courses offer an award in Employability.

If you are working with a Job Centre Plus Advisor, they will be able to help you access our dedicated ESOL programmes for their clients.

ESOL Skills for Life and Learning

If English isn’t your first language and you don’t need a national certificate for your course of study, we want to offer you a course that will help you to develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing by improving your confidence in everyday situations. Encouraging you to access services, get involved in the community and help your children with their homework.

Award in Volunteering to Support English Language Teaching and Learning for ESOL learners

If English isn’t your first language and you want to gain a recognised national certificate at Level 1, that will provide you with an introduction to volunteering within an ESOL classroom and learning about language use. This will enable you how to assist and conduct yourself as a volunteer, understand Safeguarding and signpost to other agencies and create opportunities for social engagement to take place.

Award in Understanding Community Interpreting

If English isn’t your first language and you want to gain a recognised national certificate at Level 1, that will provide you with an understanding of community interpreting, communities, organisations, and about the role of the community interpreter.

Pre-entry Learning

Oldham Lifelong Learning is working with community organisations to help people learn English, access services, and get involved in the community. If you live in Oldham and want to learn English and improve your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills then these courses will help you. We work with individuals from over 35+ countries around the world living away from their homeland, providing them with support, skills and knowledge to live and prosper in the UK. Our wide range of services includes English language classes, employment workshops, a women’s support group, a Saturday school and homework club, youth and family support services, drop-in and telephone advice, volunteer placements, and cultural and social events. We provide outreach and visits to individuals and families in detention. We also work in Afghanistan, where we are developing citizen advice centres in Kabul and Pul-e-Khumri, following a successful pilot project from 2013–2016. They will offer free, impartial and confidential advice, information, support and legal aid on issues including education, employment and domestic violence.
We are a constituted voluntary community group based in Warrington that is open to anyone who is a host or guest under the Government Homes for Ukraine scheme or family scheme. Our aim is to provide a safe place and essential care for all of our members and create a sense of family. We have over 350 Ukrainian members registered at the hub including 140 children. We have over 70 volunteers also registered. On Sundays we provide refreshments, a social space for children and adults, children’s organised play activities, adult activities such as art and music sessions. On Wednedays we provide English lessons for children and adults. We celebrate all major UK and Ukrainian festivals – e.g Easter, Christmas, Ukrainian Independence Day. We organise trips for our families e.g. theatre trips, trips to the lakes, Chester and York to help engender a sense of community and provide some good experiences for our guests. We provide both emotional and practical support including support to settle into the UK including navigating the benefits system, supporting those moving into their own home including talking to landlords, helping source furniture and equipment.
Support for asylum seekers varies from community to community. Some of the support our churches offer ranges from:
  • English language classes at no cost
  • Safe spaces to make new friends or to enjoy a meal
  • Carer and toddler groups are open to everyone
  •  Sunday worship
  • Midweek activities such as sports sessions or intergenerational activities.
  • Practical assistance through food banks and baby banks
 
ADAB offers ESOL courses from Pre-Entry to Level 1, as well as providing help and advice and employment training for adults. ADAB’s services are targeted towards all the residents living in the local communities in Bury, Greater Manchester, including Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities, refugees, and new and emerging migrant communities. Community cohesion, valuing diversity and inclusion are central key components within all the services they deliver.
