Hong Kong BN(O) Visa Extension – Household Member Route

This post is also available in: 繁體中文 (Chinese (Traditional))

The UK Government has announced that a second route will become available under the Hong Kong BN(O) visa scheme. From 30 November 2022 adult children of Hong Kong BN(O) status holders, born on or after 1 July 1997, will no longer have to form part of the same application as their BN(O) status holder parents. Instead, adult children of BN(O) status holders will be able to apply separately for the BN(O) Household Member Route.

This means that there will now be two routes available under the Hong Kong BN(O) route:

  1. The BN(O) Status Holder route: This is for a British National (Overseas) status holder who is ordinarily resident in Hong Kong or the UK. A dependent partner and a dependent child of a British National (Overseas) status holder can apply under this route. In exceptional circumstances, other family members with a high degree of dependency may also apply.
  • The BN(O) Household Member route: This is for the adult child, born on or after 1 July 1997, of a BN(O) status holder. The BN(O) Household Member, and any dependent partner or child applying under this route must form part of the same household as the British National (Overseas) status holder.

Both routes allow for work and study in the UK and are both pathways to settlement. The same conditions as the status holder route will apply, including No Recourse to Public Funds and the ability to claim settled status after 5 years residence in the UK followed by citizenship.
