Proving your immigration status
There are a number of ways you can prove your immigration status, and this may depend on how you have entered the country and the immigration route you are on. You may be asked to prove your immigration status for a number of reasons, such as when applying for a job (if you have the right to work) or if you want to rent or buy a property.
Please be aware that the RSMP cannot offer immigration advice. If you are unsure what your immigration status is please contact a registered and regulated immigration adviser or solicitor.

Passport
If you are a UK or Irish citizen you can prove your immigration status and citizenship using your British or Irish passport.
BRP Cards
If you have a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) you may be able to present this in order to prove your immigration status. More information on what a BRP card is can be found on the Biometric residence permits (BRPs): What a BRP is – GOV.UK website.
Please Note: BRP cards will be phased out from the end of 2024, being replaced by a digital eVisa system. More information on the phasing out of BRP cards will be available soon, and we will update our website with this as soon as possible.
Immigration Documents
You can use some immigration documents to prove your immigration status. These could be:
- a current passport with a Home Office ‘endorsement’ in it.
- an immigration status document.
- an Application Registration Card (ARC).
More information for using documents to prove your immigration status can be found at Prove your right to work to an employer: Using immigration documents on the GOV.UK website.
Share Codes & Digital Status
Many immigration routes are moving to a digital system to show and prove your immigration status, such as EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) and Hong Kong BN(O) visa route.
You can prove your status digitally by generating something called a “Share Code”, either online or on your UKVI app.
A Share Code can be generated and shown to, or accessed by, employers or housing providers to prove your status.
More information on how to generate a Share Code can be found on the View and prove your immigration status: get a share code – GOV.UK website.
