National Careers Service
The National Careers Service (gov.uk) provides careers information, advice and guidance to help individuals make decisions at all stages of their career. As of October 2026, NCS will merge with Job Centre Plus.
Here are some key features:
- Career Profiles – Explore over 800 career profiles to discover what different jobs involve. You can use the website to search by job title or explore by job category.
- Skills Assessment – Learn more about your skills and match them to potential new careers.
- Find Job Vacancies – You can also use the UK Government’s ‘find a job’ service (gov.uk) to search and apply for jobs. You can also find information about local recruitment events, training schemes, and roles with skills shortages.
Restart Scheme
The Restart Scheme is a government initiative in England and Wales that provides enhanced support to Universal Credit claimants who have been out of work for at least nine months. Here are the key features of the scheme:
- Purpose: The Restart Scheme aims to help individuals find jobs in their local area.
- Support Duration: Participants receive intensive support for up to 12 months (a maximum of 365 days) to support sustained employment.
- Eligibility: Universal Credit Claimants who are expected to be looking for work but have no sustained employed earnings qualify for this programme.
- Providers work with employers, local government, and other partners to deliver tailored assistance.
Ambition Manchester
Ambition Manchester (Manchester.gov.uk) is a programme offered by Manchester City Council to support residents in improving their pay and skills. They provide:
- Information, advice, and guidance: You will receive personalised support from highly qualified careers advisers.
- Action planning: Tailored to meet your needs.
- Transferable skills identification: Helping you recognise your strengths.
- Assistance with job applications and writing CVs: Boosting your chances in the job market.
- Confidence-building coaching: So that you can prepare for interviews with confidence.
- Free training: To keep your skills up-to-date.
