EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion)
What does EDI mean in the workplace?
Equality in the workplace means equal job opportunities and fairness for employees and job applicants. Employers and employees must not treat people unfairly because of reasons protected by discrimination law (Equality Act 2010). Some people have one or more “protected characteristics.”
Protected characteristics are:
- Race
- Age
- Gender
- Gender reassignment
- Sexuality
- Disability
- Religion
Diversity
Diversity is the range of people in your workforce. In the UK, we value people’s differences and we recognise and respect the fact that we will be working with people with various protected characteristics.
Bullying or discrimination in the workplace can be addressed by:
- Educating your colleagues and managers about EDI. This can highlight the benefits of having a diverse workforce and support people to interact well with people with one or more protected characteristics.
Having a dignity at work policy or a zero-tolerance policy to bullying.
Inclusion in the workplace
In the UK, we strive to have an inclusive workplace. This is an environment where everyone feels valued and included at work.
Benefits to an inclusive workplace include:
- Individuals feel comfortable to come forward with ideas.
- People can raise concerns and suggestions to managers in a safe and nurturing environment.
- Can reduce bullying and harassment in the workplace.
- Can help with staff retention.
