Here you will find some useful resources to support unaccompanied and separated children and young people. This is not an exhaustive list and there are lot of great resources available. If you find something that you think other practitioners could benefit from, please let the team know by emailing [email protected] and we can add it into this page.

Coram Seeking Support Guide
Coram Children’s Legal Centre has produced the Coram Seeking Support Guide. It is a practical guide for professionals working with unaccompanied and separated young people, covering a wide variety of topics.
Education
Oxfordshire County Council has compiled materials to Support the education provision of unaccompanied asylum seeker children (Oxfordshire County Council). The guidance includes practical strategies and guidance for teachers on how to support pupils new to English.
Health and wellbeing
NHS entitlements: Migrant Health Guide
The NHS entitlements: Migrant Health Guide – GOV.UK explains migrant patients’ entitlements, providing an in-depth look at the services in the NHS. This provides healthcare practitioners information and guidance on the healthcare needs of migrant groups. There are resources on the Migrant Health Guide that support practitioners to explain how the NHS works, and how it may be different to services they have used previously.
Health and wellbeing
The UASC Health website offers advice about the main mental health and well-being issues faced by unaccompanied and separated children.
The UASC Health – YouTube channel includes translated videos about a range of health services and practitioner roles. There is also a video made by separated children about Sleep and the things that make a difference (youtube.com).
It also includes Resources with information about a range of other topics, including:
- Semi-starvation on the journey to the UK.
- Screening for psychological distress.
- Sleep packs and disordered sleep patterns.
Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health
The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health have created a resource called Refugee and asylum seeking children and young people – guidance for paediatricians | RCPCH, which offers information to support in the assessment and management of children and young people of refugee background. It includes a number of key external links.
Doctors of the World resources:
Doctors of the World offers a wide range of Useful Resources – Doctors of the World including information about migrants’ rights to healthcare. There is also a wide range of Doctors of the World – Translated Health Information For Patients, which can be used to explain how the NHS works, GP registration and keeping young people health, amongst others.
Sexual health resources
Lets Talk About It and The Terrence Higgins Trust – Young and Free websites explain what sexual health services are, the difference in the services provided, and how to access them. There are also question and answers that can be used when educating young people on topics about sexual health and consent. The resources also discuss contraception and sexually transmitted diseases.
Young Minds Resilience cards
The Young Minds Resilience Cards are a resource to promote resilient practice with children and young people. These help young people identify the resilience they already have in their lives and why building resilience is important for coping with challenges and difficulties.
Resilience framework
The Resilient Therapy Summary Box can be used by professionals with the young people under their care. The table looks at five main areas – basics, belonging, learning, coping, and core self:
- Basics – the basic necessities the young person should have.
- Belonging – explores how the young person can form good relationships with families, neighbours, and friends.
- Learning – involves school education but also hobbies, life skills, and talents, and how to support in developing in their education.
- Coping – how to support the young person in managing and progressing though everyday life.
- Core self – helping to develop and shape the young person’s character and conduct.
Wellbeing toolkit:
The Wellbeing Toolkit — Brighter Futures (brighterfutureslondon.co.uk) was produced by a young refugee and migrant group in London. It has some great games and exercises that can be used for mental health and wellbeing, both individually or in groups.
Red Cross teaching resources:
The British Red Cross education team has produced the Explore teaching and learning resources | British Red Cross page.
Moments for Mindfulness:
The Refugee Council’s Moments-for-Mindfulness.pdf (refugeecouncil.org.uk) is a self-help guide. It offers mindfulness practices to aid in decreasing stress and promoting a positive attitude. The guide can be used individually or in group sessions.
Separated Child Foundation Sleep Packs
The Separated Child Foundation offers Arrival and Sleep packs – The Separated Child Foundation. There are two packs available, which are aimed at providing separated or unaccompanied children and young people with the essential items they will need in their first few days in the UK.
The Foundation provides these packs for free on an application-basis. Postage payment is required from the requesting organisation.
