Search services and support for migrants

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programmes at Knowsley Community College are designed for adult (19+) speakers whose first language is not English, who are living or trying to settle in England. The courses aim to develop listening, speaking, reading, writing and understanding of the English language, whatever the starting level of knowledge. ESOL courses are designed to help you improve your level of English to get more out of your life in the U.K., and to make it easier to:
  • talk to doctors, teachers, bank or shop assistants
  • fill in administrative forms
  • understand laws and customs
  • help your children with homework
  • study or train for a qualification
  • look for employment or apply for citizenship
All courses follow the national ESOL Skills for Life curriculum system and you will be taught all four skills of language learning: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. You will sit an examination for each of these skills. You will be required to do homework and to study outside of class time, as this is an important part of the learning. You will have access to the College’s library to use the computers for college work, to study in the library or to borrow books or magazines. Before you start an ESOL programme with us you will receive an interview and assessment to ensure that you are placed at the correct level to help you progress and achieve. This course will take place at our Main Campus, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 3SD. Our ESOL courses are free for EU citizens or those with a right to remain. The English Language Centre offers 3 hours a week of free unaccredited language support for refugees and asylum seekers. Who can attend? Refugees or asylum seekers over 18 years old who:
  • have an intermediate level English skills (CEFR level B1/entry 2 and above)
  • can attend both classes each week
  • live in the Liverpool City region
These classes will help you:
  • Build confidence in general English communication.
  • Improve your grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
Class times:
  • Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:20pm – 3:50pm in term time.
  • Classes run in four 10-week blocks over the academic year.
  • Classes run on a continuous enrolment basis (there is no start or end date).
Not suitable for beginners or people with only an elementary level of English.
Mary Seacole House is Liverpool’s leading Mental Health charity for BAMER (Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic & Refugee) communities. Sefton Libraries, in partnership with other organisations, offer a cultural landing point for any members of the community both new and old. Aside from the expected provision of books, computers and printers, we offer a range of activities and workshops.
We are developing a programme of drop-in advice sessions as well as creative and language learning sessions for sanctuary seekers in Bootle Library and Netherton Library.
We also offer a range of activities for children and young people as well as adults.
You can also access digital services, such as tablet loans, free data on SIM cards, and language learning software.
Overall Sefton Libraries aim to be a welcoming and relaxed space for anyone to work, learn or socialise.

Migrant Help has core services.
  • Asylum Support – Those seeking asylum in the UK can seek help by applying for accommodation and financial support, reporting issues with asylum accommodation and any other advice needed during their asylum journey. Migrant Help also provides support during the post-decision period, whether the decision has been positive or negative.
  • Victims of Slavery and Human Trafficking Support – Provide specialist support and accommodation to survivors and their dependents. Build support plans and facilitate access to key services in order to empower their clients.
At the City of Liverpool College, iff your first language is not English, our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses will help to improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. As your language skills improve, you will gain confidence and find it easier to live, work and study in the UK. You will study throughout the year and at a time to fit in with your work and home commitments. There are no formal entry requirements but you will be asked to complete an initial assessment so that you can begin your studies at the right level. Many courses are FREE, and are taught by a team of dedicated language specialists. We offer ESOL for 16-18yrs olds and adults and you will gain a city and guilds qualification at the end of your course. At St, Helens College, our free courses can help you if English is your second language and you are living or planning to settle in the UK. Our courses are offered at entry 1 – level 2 to improve your English language skills including reading and writing. They can also help you to progress on to other courses.  You will become part of our College community – a safe space to learn, be supported and thrive, where you can seek advice and support at our weekly drop-in centre, take part in a range of activities such as yoga, arts and music workshops and boxing or even join our refugee football team, Hope United FC.  Courses follow the national ESOL Skills for Life curriculum and you will be taught all four skills of language: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. They are designed to help you improve your level of English, to get more out of your life in the UK and to make it easier to:
