Eagles Wing are a mutual support group for asylum seekers and local people in Bury, Lancashire. Their aim is to befriend newcomers to our town. Old friends can make sure that no one is lonely and isolated when they arrive here. Eagles Wing do this via ‘drop-ins’ and support groups operated by volunteers throughout the week. They meet in the United Reformed Church and Bury Baptist Church.
British Red Cross Refugee Support helps people seeking asylum, refugees and other migrants on various issues including adjusting to life in a new country through casework support. The session offers the opportunity for people to meet new people and chat over hot drinks and snacks.
People can be helped with the following:
- Healthcare access and advice
- English lessons information
- Advice on community integration activities
- Information and advice on the asylum process
- Information on legal support
- Move-on support
- Family reunion
- Family tracing
Bury Adult Learning Service provide part-time adult education courses including ESOL, maths, IT, arts & crafts, languages, cookery, plus courses for people with additional learning needs. Their provision is based in the centre of Bury, very close to the bus and Metrolink station.
For ESOL they deliver classes from Pre-Entry to Level 1, where learners are given the opportunity to take speaking & listening, writing and reading exams. They also offer ESOL for Work courses for those learners that might not want to do exams but want to move into employment. Most lessons are during the day, but they also have evening classes.
Bury College also offers additional support through Student Services which may include help with the costs of travelling to college, counselling and mental health support, additional learning support and welfare advice.

Fair Futures works with children, young people and families to promote successful learning and reduce barriers to education for children and families. Fair Futures provides educational and social opportunities for people from minoritised communities in Bury, Greater Manchester, and surrounding areas, promoting participation in a cohesive community.Fair Futures also supports children and families from around the world who have come to Greater Manchester as refugees, asylum seekers and migrants.Our organisation promotes equality, equity and diversity and runs activities to promote shared understanding between people from different backgrounds.
ADAB offers ESOL courses from Pre-Entry to Level 1, as well as providing help and advice and employment training for adults. ADAB’s services are targeted towards all the residents living in the local communities in Bury, Greater Manchester, including Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities, refugees, and new and emerging migrant communities. Community cohesion, valuing diversity and inclusion are central key components within all the services they deliver. ADAB aims to be flexible with online delivery, but primarily offers in person classes, taking into account safety measures.
