We offer provision for 16-23 year olds with courses for ESOL, maths (GCSE / Functional English), English (GCSE / Functional English), IT, work skills and tutorials. The course can be started at any time during the year.
We cover pre-entry to level 2 for ESOL with options for accreditation.
Blackburn College offers a range of courses and qualifications for young people over the age of 16 years, and adults. Our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses can help you improve your English. ESOL qualifications are designed to help you develop the skills you use in everyday life. They can also help you boost your CV or move on to further study. We offer a course for 16 – 18yrs olds too.
The courses cover speaking and listening, reading and writing, gaining vocabulary as well as all aspects of punctuation and grammar.
Taking an ESOL qualification can help you:
– With employment
– Talk to doctors and teachers
– Support your child with their homework
– Understand the customs of the UK
– Pass the Life in the UK test and become a British citizen
Support for asylum seekers varies from community to community. Some of the support our churches offer ranges from:
- English language classes at no cost
- Safe spaces to make new friends or to enjoy a meal
- Carer and toddler groups are open to everyone
- Sunday worship
- Midweek activities such as sports sessions or intergenerational activities.
- Practical assistance through food banks and baby banks
Volunteer-run ESOL classes on Mondays and Fridays at 10 am (10-12) for beginners and low-level learners during term time. Students can attend from arrival in the UK.
A weekly drop-in session during term time takes place on Wednesdays between 2 and 4 pm at St Thomas Church Centre, Marton St, Lancaster, for Asylum Seekers and Refugees. The sessions offer a cafe space for socialising with board games etc., an ESOL class, an information desk run by a local ASR support charity (RAIS), a barber corner, and the distribution of clothing.

-Arranging English conversation and/ or ESOL lessons
-Getting your children into school
-Finding a doctor and dentist
-Discussing any problems you may have with your accommodation

-Meeting other people
Our ESOL classes are in Nelson Library and if you are interested or you need any help with your finding out your English level, you can take a test either in the PNN office or in the library.
