 Journey of Unaccompained Children to the UK

This session will cover the experiences and background of unaccompanied children (UASC). The session content will focus on how unaccompanied children fit within the global context of migration, how children become unaccompanied, routes and journeys of unaccompanied children, situations in Europe, and mental health and wellbeing of unaccompanied children. This session will be participatory and rely heavily on participant engagement through case studies and discussion.

Audience: All practitioners and services working with unaccompained children including social workers, leaving care and asylum leads, education, health, commissioning, placement providers including supported accommodation, residential, foster carers and supported lodgings householders.

This session’s content will focus primarily on the geography and history of Afghanistan, as well as Afghan’s experiences in conflict. The session will also look at the services (including education and health care) Afghans may be used to and their expectations around accessing those services in Afghanistan. Moreover, the session will focus on Afghan cultural norms, practices, family, and social life. 

Audience: All practitioners and services working with unaccompained children including social workers, leaving care and asylum leads, education, health, commissioning, placement providers including supported accommodation, residential, foster carers and supported lodgings householders.

This session’s content will focus primarily on Sudan’s geography, history, and current events. This session will also discuss Sudanese society and the cultural norms of the Sudanese community both within Sudan and living in neighbouring countries. Moreover, this session’s content will focus primarily on experiences that the Sudanese communities may face in displacement within and outside their country of origin. This session will also focus on the Sudanese community’s experiences with services both while in displacement and in their country of origin. .

Audience: All practitioners and services working with unaccompained children including social workers, leaving care and asylum leads, education, health, commissioning, placement providers including supported accommodation, residential, foster carers and supported lodgings householders.

By the end of the webinar, you will:

    • Familiarise yourself with the demographic characteristics of young individuals who require care,

    • Understand why young people might leave home,

    • Understand how young people can become separated,

    • Have an understanding of some common migration routes to the UK,

    • Gain insight into welcoming and supporting young people who are newly arrived in the UK,

    • Be able to identify and meet young people’s immediate needs.

Audience: Foster carers and supported lodgings host, including newly approved foster carers and supported lodging host and for prospective carers from the assessment stage to panel, commissioning, health, recruitment.

Understanding the Asylum Process for unaccompained children 

The course is aimed at social work practitioners, social work managers and other front-line practitioners involved with or having responsibility for supporting Unaccompanied Children with the asylum application/ legal process. It is a very good follow on if you have attended the IOM information sessions on Unaccompanied Children journey/ experiences–to optimally support UASC in your care, though you do not need to have attended the IOM Unaccompanied Children session to do this course.

Delivered by: Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit (GMIAU)

Audience: Local authority colleagues including social workers, leaving care and asylum leads, external placement providers including supported accommodation, residential and fostering, foster carers and supported lodgings householders.
