Hong Kong British National (Overseas) Visa Scheme – Key Information

  • A new immigration route providing British National (Overseas) (BN(O)) status holders from Hong Kong and their dependants with the opportunity to come to the UK to live, study and work, on a pathway to citizenship.
  • BN(O) visa holders are allowed to work, but cannot usually apply for most benefits (public funds).
  • Newly arrived Hong Kong BN(O) visa holders are not eligible for AEB (Adult Education Budget) funding for the first three years.
  • However, local authorities can claim funding from DLUHC to support BN(O) status holders to access English courses.
  • Funding is also available to local authorities to support Hong Kong BN(O)s if they become destitute.

Who are we?

  • North West Regional Strategic Partnership (RSMP) is a partnership that works with stakeholders across the region to ensure that areas are able to support and benefit from migration.
  • The North West Hong Kong BN(O)Welcome Hub is funded by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC). We are one of the UK’s 12 Hong Kong BN(O) Welcome Hubs – an online resource providing all those on the BN(O) route with information on how to access services and understand life in the UK.

What else do we do?

  • Organise information and engagement events for Hong Kong BN(O) visa holders in the region
  • Work with different services so that BN(O)s can be correctly linked and signposted
  • Respond to ongoing enquiries from BN(O)s via the Welcome Hub
  • Work with Local Authorities to find best ways to support BN(O) visa holders
  • Monitor any issues BN(O) visa holders face and feed them back to DLUHC
  • Raise awareness about the Hong Kong BN(O) Visa Scheme among all stakeholders.
